The Best EV Salary Sacrifice Schemes for 2025

Best Salary Sacrifice Schemes Electric Car Scheme

Salary sacrifice has been a popular employee benefit scheme since the 1970s, allowing workers to maximise their gross salary by paying for benefits before tax. Instead of using their take-home pay, employees agree to reduce their pre-tax salary in exchange for benefits like pensions, childcare vouchers, or gym memberships. This leads to lower Income Tax and National Insurance contributions, resulting in significant savings compared to paying for these benefits from net salary. With The Electric Car Scheme, employees can save substantially on the monthly lease cost of electric cars.

Company electric vehicle (EV) schemes through salary sacrifice have seen rapid growth as more employees seek affordable ways to switch to an electric car. In early 2025, our study found that 83% of respondents were interested in implementing an electric car scheme within the year. This surge in interest comes as the government's 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel vehicles approaches, making these schemes an attractive option for both employers and employees.

For those considering an EV salary sacrifice scheme, it's important to note that eligibility and offerings vary across providers. To help you make an informed decision, we've compiled essential information from the UK's top EV salary sacrifice providers.

What Are EV Salary Sacrifice Schemes?

EV salary sacrifice schemes refer to an agreement between an employer and an employee, where the employee agrees to give a portion of their pre-tax salary towards a specific benefit. In the case of EV salary sacrifice, the benefit is an electric car. These car schemes help employees make the switch to driving an electric car, whilst helping businesses achieve their sustainability goals through reduced carbon dioxide emissions - overall, it's a great employee benefit to offer. This tax-efficient agreement reduces income tax and national insurance contributions, whilst paying a small Benefit-in-Kind tax (set very low for electric cars currently at 3%), saving the employee £5,000 - £15,000 throughout the lease.

Average Savings When Getting An EV Via Salary Sacrifice

A common concern about going electric is their high upfront cost. Company salary sacrifice schemes are an excellent way to help employees save on their car expenses through reduced income tax and national insurance contributions, making them feel valued as part of the team. The flexible contract and lease terms make it an affordable and cost-effective option.

Below is an example of a salary sacrifice breakdown for the MG4, one of the most popular EVs in 2025.

MG4 - orange - quarter front view

Source: The Electric Car Scheme

PaycheckCost
Gross Salary Per Annum£70,000
Average Monthly Salary Sacrifice (inc VAT)£390
Employee Tax Savings-£156
Employee National Insurance Savings-£8
Average Benefit-in-Kind Tax Over Term+£40
Final Monthly Payment (Net Cost)£266

As shown above, an employee leasing an MG4 for 10,000 miles per year over a three-year term can save £124 monthly, or £4,464 over three years, by opting for salary sacrifice instead of leasing the car themselves. This includes £156 in monthly tax savings and £8 in National Insurance savings, offset by an average monthly benefit-in-kind tax of £40. Employees can use our handy salary sacrifice calculator, which shows all of our new and used cars available to lease. All you have to do is input your salary and your details, and a tailored quote will be generated based on that and the lease terms you have inputted.

Early Termination Protection

The Electric Car Scheme offers Complete Employer Protection which provides reassurances that the employer is protected from Day 1. If an employer has to make redundancies or dismiss an employee, they can do this at any time without facing a fee. This protection also covers any shortfalls due to employee resignation, long-term illness, or family-related leave. Additionally, if an employee fails to reimburse the company for vehicle damage, the employer remains fully protected. The table (to the left) shows what's protected and when. If you would like to see how The Electric Car Scheme’s early termination protection compares to other EV salary sacrifice providers, click here.

Working with multiple leasing funders allows The Electric Car Scheme to offer competitive pricing options. Their multi-funder approach provides price comparisons across the market and potentially lower costs than single-funder providers. This extensive network also means customers have a wider range of electric cars to choose from and can benefit from comprehensive price comparisons across the market. The Electric Car Scheme features the UK's largest selection of used electric cars, sourced from multiple trusted leasing companies, ensuring prices are more competitive than other salary sacrifice schemes.

Used cars can generally be delivered more quickly than new vehicles, with typical delivery times of approximately 14 days. Plus, all used cars come with the same comprehensive package as new ones, including maintenance (service, MOT and tyres), insurance options, electric car charging and Complete Employer Protection.

Service

With thousands of leading employers signed up to the scheme, The Electric Car Scheme is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot. You can also read their client case studies here.

Green Credentials

Electric Car Charging

The Electric Car Scheme offers The Charge Scheme, which provides salary sacrifice charging across various locations with 20-50% savings:

The Cheapest Way to Charge: The Charge Scheme

The Charge Scheme is a market-leading proposition from The Electric Car Scheme that makes EV charging more affordable through salary sacrifice, regardless of where you charge.

Employees can save 20-50% on all their charging costs through The Charge Scheme's dedicated app and card. This industry-first salary sacrifice offering enables drivers to reduce their charging expenses, whether they:

  • Charge at home (with or without a driveway).

  • Use office/workplace charging points.

  • Rely on public charging networks.

How The Charge Scheme Works

The process is simple:

  • Employees opt to salary sacrifice their charging costs.

  • They receive The Charge Scheme app and public charging card.

  • The app tracks monthly mileage and charging usage.

  • Employers receive straightforward payroll instructions to set up gross salary deductions.

  • Employees enjoy 20-50% savings on all their EV charging expenses.

Home Charging

Employees can bundle a home charge point installation into their salary sacrifice payments through Smart Home Charge, which means they can also save 20-50% on the cost. When paired with The Electric Car Scheme’s OVO partnership, drivers can receive 6,000 free miles and can smart charge their EVs for just 7p per kWh (approximately 2p per mile).

Office Charging

Workplace charging costs can be included in salary sacrifice payments with The Charge Scheme, helping employees save on their daily commute charging expenses. If you are looking for help installing chargers at your workplace, The Electric Car Scheme partners with multiple providers to make this easy.

Octopus Electric Vehicles

Founded in 2018, Octopus EV is on a mission to put more people behind the wheel of an electric vehicle. Additionally, customers receive 4,000 free miles through the Octopus Electroverse and a £50 energy credit when they switch to Octopus Energy.

What’s Included?

Octopus EV offers the following as part of its EV salary sacrifice package:

  • Free home charger

  • EV energy tariff

  • 4,000 miles of free charging

  • MOT

  • Maintenance and repairs

  • Breakdown cover

  • Fully comprehensive insurance

What we love

Charging: Free Ohme charger and 4,000 free miles

Reputation: Established household name with 4.8/5 Trustpilot

Additional: £50 energy credit with Octopus Energy switch

What could be better

Protection: Risk protection is only effective after 3 months

Vehicles: Limited choice as Octopus owns the cars

Pricing: Less competitive due to single funder

Early Termination Protection

Octopus EV provides Day 1 protection for major life events that may impact your wages, such as sickness or loss of license for medical reasons. After the lease agreement has been active for 3 months, employees can return their vehicle without an early termination charge if they experience dismissal, resignation, or redundancy (including voluntary). However, Octopus EV caps its early termination protection to 10 vehicles or 10% of your company’s fleet annually, meaning larger companies could be affected by this limitation.

Used Car Offering

Octopus EV offers used electric cars, all of which have either been used for demos, company cars or come from former leases. Octopus EV claim their used cars have travelled less than 15,000 miles.

Pricing

Octopus EV owns the cars they offer to employees, which means their pricing may not be as competitive as salary sacrifice providers that work with multiple funders.

Service

Octopus EV is currently rated 4.8 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot.

Green Credentials

The Octopus Group is a certified B Corp and has been since 2011, but Octopus EV has not yet gained the certification.

EV Charging

As previously mentioned, if you choose to lease an electric car through Octopus EV, you can choose between getting a free Ohme charger and installation or 4,000 free miles to use on the Octopus Electroverse - both equate roughly to £600.

LoveElectric

LoveElectric is a Scottish-based EV salary sacrifice scheme, on a mission to halve the cost of motoring. Their approach is to provide the tools, information and support so decision-makers can make the best choice for their business. LoveElectric has several add-ons to make their salary sacrifice car scheme more attractive, like their early termination protection and the fact that they have partnered with OVO to offer their customers 5,000 free miles of driving.

What's Included?

 LoveElectric's salary sacrifice package includes:

  • 5,000 free miles with OVO

  • Breakdown cover

  • Motor insurance for up to three drivers

  • Optional EV energy tariff

What we love

Risk: Comprehensive early termination protection

Additional: A wide range of protection scenarios covered

What could be better

Protection: Zero Risk Guarantee costs extra (£9/month)

Coverage: Protection features are only available after the waiting period

Pricing: Only use one funder - causing less competitive pricing

Early Termination Protection

LoveElectric provides Early Termination Protection with coverage varying by circumstance. Their standard protection begins after three months for resignation and three to six months for other scenarios. They offer an optional Zero Risk Guarantee for £9 per month (per employee) that provides day one protection.

Used Car Offering

Love Electric offers used cars through their "ReLoved Cars" program. They claim to offer quick delivery times and competitive pricing. No deposit is required and they offer flexible lease terms from 12 months.

Pricing

LoveElectric partners with one leasing provider, potentially limiting competitive car pricing. The scheme is cost-neutral for employers to implement.

Service

LoveElectric is currently rated 4.8/5 stars on Trustpilot.

Green Credentials

LoveElectric holds B Corp certification and donates 10% of profits to environmental charities like Asthma UK's Clear Air Campaign.

EV Charging

LoveElectric partners with OVO to provide customers with 5,000 free miles and offers discounted home charger installation through Hypervolt.

Tusker

Tusker began offering car schemes in 2008. As one of the longest-running providers of vehicle lease solutions, Tusker still offers flexible options for petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric car choices through their company salary sacrifice car scheme. Their comprehensive fleet solutions provide significant National Insurance savings, making them a cost-effective choice for businesses seeking various salary sacrifice options.

What’s Included?

Tusker offers car insurance (and the option to add your partner), breakdown cover, and maintenance cover all as standard in the lease cost.

What we love

Protection & Risk: Comprehensive employer protection

Experience: Over a decade of EV salary sacrifice experience

Service: Well-established with 4.6/5 Trustpilot rating

Additional Features: All-inclusive package as standard

Green Credentials: Multiple Green Apple Environmental Awards

What could be better

Charging: No EV charging support or incentives

Vehicle Selection: Limited used car availability

Coverage: Limited employee protection compared to employer

Early Termination Protection

Tusker's early termination protection covers resignation, redundancy, dismissal, parental leave, and long-term sickness (after 3 months into the lease agreement). However, if an employee leaves and fails to pay their early termination fees within the first three months, the business is not covered, leaving the company exposed during this period.

Used Car Offering

Tusker has not yet publicly launched its used electric vehicle offering, but it is expected to come soon as it has been rolled out to some Employer Portals, but not all of them just yet. It is expected that they will provide their own used cars from their managed fleet, either when vehicles reach the end of their contract or are returned due to early termination.

Pricing

With Tusker, the electric car is sourced and owned by the leasing provider (which is Tusker themselves), not the employee or the company. The employee leases the car through the scheme, while Tusker retains ownership throughout the lease term. This structure may make Tusker less price-competitive compared to other salary sacrifice providers that work with multiple funders.

Service

Tusker is currently rated 4.6 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot.

Green Credentials

Tusker is committed to improving its carbon footprint, increasing its electric car orders from 17% in 2019 to 83% in 2023. The company has also received several green awards, including the Green Apple Environmental Award for Environmental Best Practice, which they’ve won six times.

EV Charging

Tusker currently does not offer any EV charging incentives for its salary-sacrifice customers.

Fleet Alliance

Fleet Alliance is established in the business fleet leasing industry, yet it started offering an EV salary sacrifice scheme at the beginning of 2023. The key feature of their company's EV scheme is the emphasis on customisation rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution.

What’s Included?

  • Access to ‘every new electric car on the market’

  • Servicing and maintenance costs are included in monthly payments

  • Option to add fully comprehensive insurance

  • UK breakdown cover included as standard

  • Early termination insurance can be added if the employee leaves the company

  • At-home charging package available

  • No upfront costs or credit checks are required

What we love

Vehicles: Access to multiple funders

Pricing: Multi-bid approach for competitive deals

Service: Customised employer/employee portals

Additional: e-Fleet management system

Charging: ScottishPower partnership for charging solutions

What could be better

Protection: Early termination fees apply

Charging: No free public charging allowances

Vehicles: Limited used car availability

Early Termination Protection

If a scheme participant needs to return the car before the lease ends, the employer will incur an early termination fee. The fee is calculated and notified to the participant's employer as soon as possible after Fleet Alliance receives notice of the early termination. The employer will deduct the early termination fee from the participant’s net pay or invoice them for it if they have left their job.

However, depending on the employer’s agreement with Fleet Alliance, various options are available to reduce this cost. This includes:

  • Purchasing the car, subject to the lender's discretion,

  • Alternative arrangements like reallocating the car to another employee

  • Employers may choose to waive some or all of the early termination charges.

Used Car Offering

Fleet Alliance offers second-hand cars only when vehicles are returned early by participants before the end of their salary sacrifice term. This means they don’t have a regular supply of second-hand cars available for selection.

Pricing

Fleet Alliance has access to multiple funders, which they call a ‘multi-bid approach’, ensuring that customers always get the most competitive lease deals. This means customers will have a wider range of options and also means they can compare prices across the market.

Service

Fleet Alliance has a 4.8 out of 5-star rating on Trustpilot.

Green Credentials

The most prevalent green credential Fleet Alliance holds is that it is part of the EV100, a group of companies that are committed to accelerating the transition to electric cars.

EV Charging

Fleet Alliance supports customers with EV charging through its partnership with ScottishPower, called Fleet Zero. This service offers charging solutions for businesses, including home chargers for company car drivers, workplace chargers, and access to public charging facilities. They also provide a free EV readiness tool, offering instant driver reports and a business insights dashboard.

LeasePlan/Ayvens

LeasePlan has offered company EV schemes since 2010 under the name 'SalaryPlan.' Early Termination Protection

Information on LeasePlan’s early termination protection can be hard to find online, but according to EV Schemes, LeasePlan will cover the car after 12 months or once £1,500 has been paid. An early termination fee and a fair wear-and-tear assessment will also apply.

LeasePlan also offers a charging card that provides access to a public charging network, with energy and consumption tracking available through the My Fleet Portal.

Novuna

Novuna operates similarly to LeasePlan in that eligible businesses must have 1,500 or more employees to offer their company a salary sacrifice car scheme. With a long-standing presence in the fleet industry, Novuna has moved away from personal leasing to focus on providing sustainable vehicle solutions through its car schemes.

What’s Included?

Novuna’s salary sacrifice scheme includes:

With an increasing focus on EV adoption, their affordable personal contract hire lease options have helped thousands of customers nationwide make the switch to electric cars. Recently they expanded their services to include EV salary sacrifice, which aligns with current government tax incentives.

What’s Included?

Employees can receive a new or used car that is fully maintained and insured for a 3 or 4-year period, based on their choice, and simply return the vehicle at the end of the contract.

Employers can also add insurance and risk coverage for added security and peace of mind.

What we love

Alternative Salary Sacrifice Providers

There are several smaller, alternative salary sacrifice providers to choose from, like Pike and Bambridge, XCite Salary Sacrifice and Jurni Leasing. The benefit of choosing a smaller, lesser-known salary sacrifice provider is that there is often a more personalised service, with tailored support that can be better suited to the specific needs of your business.

Smaller providers may also offer more flexibility in their packages, with the potential for customised leasing terms or unique perks that larger companies might not provide. Additionally, these providers might have fewer clients, allowing for quicker response times and a more hands-on approach to customer service. However, it’s important to carefully compare costs, service levels, vehicle options, and the overall reputation of these providers to ensure they meet your needs.

How To Choose The Right Scheme As An Employee?

As an employee, most of the time you aren’t given a great deal of choice, because this largely depends on what your company already offers. In some instances, a company will offer two salary sacrifice schemes, or maybe you can put a case forward for implementing an EV scheme. If you do have the opportunity to choose or suggest a car scheme, there are several key features to consider.

First, use the scheme's quote calculator, if they have one, to understand your potential savings based on your salary and tax bracket. The next things to look for are crucial features like Complete Employer Protection, which safeguards you if you need to end the lease early due to circumstances like redundancy or long-term illness. Also consider whether you want a new or used electric car, as used vehicles can offer additional savings while providing the same scheme benefits. Finally, make sure the scheme includes comprehensive support, such as maintenance, insurance options, and charging solutions like The Charge Scheme, which can save you 20-50% on charging costs. The right scheme should make the switch to an electric car an obvious choice.

How Do Used Car Leasing And Subscription Offers Compare?

Leasing and subscription offers for used electric cars serve different needs, though salary sacrifice through a scheme like The Electric Car Scheme typically offers the most significant savings. The main difference is that leasing involves a fixed-term contract (usually 2-4 years) with set monthly payments, while subscriptions offer more flexibility with rolling monthly or short-term commitments.

With salary sacrifice on a used EV, you can save 20-50% compared to a standard lease through tax benefits, while still receiving comprehensive protection and support. Traditional used car leasing typically requires a larger upfront payment and monthly payments from your post-tax income, making it more expensive overall. Subscription services offer more flexibility with shorter commitments and the ability to switch vehicles, but this convenience comes at a premium - you'll usually pay substantially more per month than with a salary sacrifice scheme. Additionally, subscription services may not include the comprehensive protection and support package that comes with a dedicated EV salary sacrifice provider, such as guaranteed coverage for early termination due to redundancy or illness.
