B Corp Certified Business

In January 2024, we were proud to have been certified as a B Corp, which acknowledges our commitment to being a force for good in the world of work.

But what does that actually mean? B Corps are businesses that live the highest social and environmental standards for people and the planet. To be certified as a B Corp means that we are held accountable by a recognised network and that we stay focused on our mission to help people transition to electric cars.

Since its launch in 2006, more than 200,000 businesses have signed up for the B Corp Impact Assessment, yet only 8,000 have been certified. This is a testament to its extremely high standards.

Making Net Zero the obvious choice

By working with a B Corp certified business, you can rest assured that your supplier meets a high verified standard of social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.

At The Electric Car Scheme, our goal is to make net zero the obvious choice. You can offer a cost-neutral employee benefit that gives employees access to the most affordable way to switch to an electric car. Together we’re speeding up our ability to tackle climate change by empowering others to make sustainable choices.

The Electric Car Scheme is here to break down barriers. We are so proud to be leading the charge when it comes to sustainable workplace technology and to be contributing to a global movement towards a more inclusive, sustainable, and fair economy.

What’s our B Corp score?

To become a certified B Corp, businesses must score 80 points or more. We're proud to say that we've surpassed this benchmark with a score of 104.3. But we're not stopping there – our goal is to achieve an even higher score in the future.

B Corp certification is handled by B Lab, a non-profit supporting a worldwide group of entrepreneurs. They believe in using business as a tool to address social and environmental problems globally. Their vision is that businesses everywhere will prioritise and manage their impact alongside their profits.

To keep our B Corp certification, we need to continue documenting our positive impact to qualify and undergo recertification every three years. This involves updating our impact assessment and verifying our updated score.

The Electric Car Scheme CEO and Co-Founder Thom Groot commented:

“We built this company to help people make sustainable decisions affordably. Our goals and that of the B Corp movement are incredibly intertwined, so going through certification was a no-brainer, even if it took a lot of work. We’re delighted it was a success.”

“This recognition represents not just a successful application; it's a testament to our dedication to transparency, accountability, and profound sense of purpose. We believe that, as a B Corp, we can inspire others in our industry to embrace responsible business practices, fostering positive change on a global scale.”

“We’re pleased that this certification process is as rigorous as it is. We want our customers to be able to trust that when we say we’re trying to make the world a better place.”

Frequently asked questions

  • A B Corp, short for Benefit Corporation, is a certification designed to guide businesses in prioritizing their social and environmental contributions. These companies demonstrate their commitment to making choices that consider not only profits but also the positive effects they have on society and the environment.

  • A certified B Corporation is a for-profit company that has been officially recognised for meeting specific standards in social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. To become certified, a company needs to undergo a comprehensive assessment of its business practices and policies, focusing on areas such as workers' rights, environmental impact, and community engagement.

Once certified, the company commits to maintaining higher standards of social and environmental responsibility and regularly reporting its progress. Certified B Corporations have gained popularity because both customers and investors seek companies that actively contribute to positive change.

Considering this trend, it's likely that being a B Corp will become the norm for companies in the future.

  • We discussed the requirements for becoming a B Corp, but who gets to decide? To become a certified B Corp, you have to go through an assessment conducted by the non-profit organisation B Lab. This assessment evaluates how your company affects employees, customers, the community, and the environment. After certification, you need to uphold this status by meeting strict standards and being transparent. As a result, B Corps are at the forefront of building a new economy that prioritises both people and the planet.

  • The process takes between 6 to 8 months, sometimes even longer. It involves several steps: passing the B Impact Rating System, having an interview with a B Lab member, adopting a B Corp legal framework, and signing a term sheet to officially declare your company as a B Corp. Though it may seem lengthy and a bit intense, becoming a B Corp is a fantastic way to demonstrate your dedication to making a positive impact on the world. Plus, you'll become part of a community of businesses that share similar goals and values.
