How green are electric cars?

How green are electric cars?

Electric cars are more environmentally friendly than traditional cars, emitting fewer greenhouse gases throughout their lifespan. This is true even when accounting for the energy used to manufacture, as well as power them.

Although electric cars are an improvement, they won't be entirely green until they can run on 100% renewable energy. It's worth noting that in the UK, 43% of electricity comes from renewable sources.

Conventional petrol and diesel cars consume approximately 17,000 litres of petrol and 13,500 litres of diesel over there lifetime. To illustrate, a study by Transport and Environment reveals that if you were to stack oil barrels vertically, they would reach a height of 70-90 metres, equivalent to a 25-story building!

Why does The Electric Car Scheme exist?

“Cars typically spend around 12 years on the road, covering approximately 120,000 miles in their lifetime. At The Electric Car Scheme, our focus is not on existing vehicles but on shaping the impact of new cars entering the market. Our significant influence lies in steering consumers towards opting for a new Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) instead of a traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) car.

By addressing key barriers, particularly affordability, The Electric Car Scheme facilitates a smoother transition for customers to electric vehicles, fostering an increase in demand for new electric cars. This shift in consumer preference triggers a positive cycle, driving infrastructure and manufacturing investments, subsequently accelerating innovation and uptake rates.”

Frequently asked questions

  • We calculate the CO2 emissions saved based on the Distance Based Impact methodology. This approach allows for accurate accounting of CO2e savings, making it applicable for your Scope 3 emissions reporting. The data on vehicle mileage and occupancy are sourced from the Department for Transport, and the comparative life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of mid-size BEVs and ICE vehicles are based on studies by the IEA (International Energy Agency), under the licence CC BY 4.0.

To calculate the number of trees saved, we assume that the Carbon Dioxide absorption rate of the average tree is 22 kg per year. This is based on a study conducted by the US Department of Agriculture.

  • By signing up to The Electric Car Scheme, your business can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and enhance its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance. The scheme promotes the usage of electric cars among your employees, contributing to lower CO2 emissions and fostering a culture of sustainability within your organisation.

  • Electric cars are considered more environmentally friendly due to their lower greenhouse gas emissions throughout their lifecycle compared to traditional petrol and diesel cars. This includes emissions from manufacturing, operation, and eventual disposal. Furthermore, as the electricity grid becomes greener with more renewable energy sources, the environmental benefits of electric cars increase.

  • Being B Corp Certified means that The Electric Car Scheme has met rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. This certification reflects our commitment to ensuring that our operations and services contribute positively to our planet and society.
