The Charge Scheme Explained

As we're engaging with employees about transitioning to electric cars, a common question or objection is about charging - mainly that it's too expensive, especially for people who don't have a driveway.

Public charging is often more expensive than petrol. As soon as someone considers that, it becomes less of an obvious choice. They think, "I'm going to get a great cheap car, but if it's going to cost me more to run versus a petrol car, I need to weigh that up."

We started doing investigations and found that if you can charge at home, it's going to be much cheaper than petrol - about 6p per mile versus petrol at 16p per mile. But if you charge at a rapid public charge point, that comes in at 24p per mile. There's a big difference, and at some point that becomes prohibitive, especially for people without a driveway.

We did extensive work and looked into what's possible. It is possible to salary sacrifice energy charging through a salary sacrifice card. We have hundreds of thousands of employees participating and signed up to the scheme. We actually got certified as a B Corp last year to underline our green credentials, which we're very proud of.

The products we've created are absolutely brilliant, including the risk protection elements and the service we offer. It's an all-in-one package including the car, charge point, insurance, and everything else together.

The growth in our second-hand electric car offering has been fantastic because it really brings down the price point and makes affordability even greater.

At the end of last year, we launched the charge scheme. That's about applying the same benefits of salary sacrifice that we get for the electric car to charging. Whether you charge at home, at the office, or on the road, you can salary sacrifice the costs of charging your EVs to make it more affordable.
