  • The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y offer excellent value through salary sacrifice schemes, with taxpayers saving monthly whilst accessing premium electric technology and comprehensive charging access.

Tesla Electric Cars Overview & Market Leadership

Tesla has been a clear leader of the UK electric vehicle market for years, with the Model Y crowned the best-selling electric car back in 2023. Tesla's success reflects the broader shift towards electric mobility, with the company offering compelling technology features and charging infrastructure that appeal to UK consumers.

The UK electric vehicle market offers consumers more choice than ever, with Tesla providing competitive value alongside other leading manufacturers. Tesla models typically offer strong range capabilities and advanced technology features, making them popular choices for drivers looking for efficient and capable electric vehicles.

Tesla's Technology-First Approach

Tesla works differently from traditional car manufacturers. Where they offer annual model updates, Tesla provides over-the-air software improvements that regularly improve vehicle capabilities throughout ownership.

The 2025.32 software update shows this approach in action, introducing Grok AI Assistant integration, improved safety features including Tesla Vision-based airbag deployment, and entertainment upgrades like Light Sync for music-synchronised ambient lighting. These aren't minor tweaks - they're substantial capability additions that would traditionally require purchasing a new vehicle.

This update system transforms car ownership from a depreciating asset into an improving technology platform. Owners regularly receive new features, better efficiency, improved safety systems, and more entertainment options. This software-first philosophy creates real value that goes far beyond the initial purchase price.

The complete technology package includes a built-in dashcam and Sentry Mode, integrated navigation with Supercharger trip planning, and seamless entertainment options. Tesla's ability to deliver safety improvements, efficiency gains, and new features directly to existing vehicles represents a clear advantage over traditional automotive manufacturers.

However, some limitations remain. Full Self-Driving (FSD) capabilities are not fully operational in the UK due to regulatory requirements. Tesla's Basic Autopilot remains legal and functional, providing traffic-aware cruise control and lane-keeping assistance that meets current UK requirements.

Tesla Model 3

Starting from £39,990

The Tesla Model 3 Highland refresh is the most accessible entry into Tesla's electric technology, combining cutting-edge features with practical everyday use. This premium saloon delivers impressive performance at a fair price whilst maintaining the efficiency that makes long-distance electric driving straightforward.

What you get:

  • RWD: 344 miles of range with 0-60mph in 6.1 seconds

  • Long Range AWD: 421 miles of range with dual motor all-wheel drive

  • Performance: 305 miles of range with 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds

  • Redesigned interior with 8-inch rear touchscreen and acoustic glass

  • Advanced Autopilot and regular over-the-air updates

The Highland refresh addresses previous owner feedback with significantly improved cabin quietness, better materials throughout, and ambient lighting that creates a premium atmosphere. The removal of indicator stalks shows Tesla's minimalist design philosophy, though this requires getting used to it for traditional drivers.

The Model 3 shows that affordable electric cars can deliver a premium experience. With its sleek saloon design and Tesla technology throughout, it offers an excellent range whilst maintaining the performance and features that make every journey comfortable.

Tesla Model Y

Starting from £46,990

The Tesla Model Y combines the practicality of a family SUV with the efficiency of a premium saloon, creating an ideal vehicle for modern British families. The 2025 Juniper refresh launched in May and addressed previous comfort concerns while maintaining the versatility that made it Britain's best-selling electric car.

What you get:

  • Long Range AWD: 387 miles of range with dual motor performance

  • Launch Edition: Premium features, including ventilated seats and power boot

  • Performance (late 2025): 510+ horsepower with 3.3-second 0-60mph

  • 854-2,138 litres of storage space with power-folding rear seats

  • Full-width LED light bar and improved aerodynamics

The Juniper refresh introduces ventilated front seats, hands-free power boot, electric rear seat folding, and significantly improved suspension comfort. Better acoustic engineering creates a quieter cabin whilst 9 airbags, including far-side driver protection, show Tesla's ongoing safety commitment.

The Model Y shows that family SUVs can be both practical and environmentally responsible. With its spacious interior design and Tesla features throughout, it offers the range and capability families need, whilst delivering the efficiency that makes electric driving economical.

Left-Hand Only Tesla Models

Tesla Model S

Starting from £95,480

The Tesla Model S can be considered the top level of electric luxury performance, combining impressive acceleration with executive saloon refinement. This flagship shows Tesla's capability to compete with traditional luxury manufacturers whilst delivering efficiency that petrol alternatives cannot match.

What you get:

  • Dual Motor: 405 miles of range with refined luxury appointments

  • Plaid: 1,020 horsepower with 1.99-second 0-60mph acceleration

  • 17-inch tilting touchscreen with 22-speaker premium audio system

  • Advanced air suspension with adaptive damping

  • Full autonomous driving hardware preparation

The Model S features Tesla's most advanced technology, including a yoke steering wheel option, bioweapon defence mode air filtration, and the most sophisticated battery thermal management system available. The Plaid variant delivers exceptional performance whilst maintaining practical 4-door usability.

However, UK customers should note an important limitation: this car is only available in left-hand drive configuration. This decision creates practical challenges for British roads, affecting junction visibility, drive-through access, and parking convenience. Tesla Model X

Starting from £104,925

The Tesla Model X combines luxury SUV capability with distinctive design elements that set it apart from any competitor. The Falcon Wing doors and flexible seating for 5-7 passengers create a unique proposition for families seeking premium electric mobility.

What you get:

  • Dual Motor: 348 miles of range with sophisticated all-wheel drive

  • Falcon Wing doors with obstacle detection and auto-opening

  • 5+2 seating configuration with flat-folding capability

  • Advanced air suspension and adaptive damping

  • Premium audio system and full connectivity

The Model X shows Tesla's engineering ambition with the Falcon Wing door mechanism that automatically adapts to available space. The interior flexibility allows transformation from executive transport to cargo carrier, depending on requirements.

Important limitation for UK buyers: Like the Model S, the Model X is available in left-hand drive only since Tesla cancelled all UK right-hand drive orders in 2023. This significantly affects practical usability on British roads, creating challenges for visibility and everyday convenience.

Tesla Cybertruck: Not Available in the UK

The Tesla Cybertruck has generated enormous interest globally with its radical angular design and impressive performance specifications. However, the Cybertruck is not available for purchase in the UK, and Tesla has not announced plans for European availability.

This vehicle is large. It has unique construction materials, and regulatory requirements create substantial barriers for UK roads. Road safety regulations, particularly regarding pedestrian protection, present challenges for the Cybertruck's angular steel construction.

Recent comments from Tesla's Chief Designer, Franz von Holzhausen, suggest the company is considering both a Cyber SUV and a smaller Cybertruck for future development. When asked about these possibilities, he noted: "Those are definitely things we've considered. Wait & see is probably the best way I can answer that." A more compact version could address some of the regulatory concerns that currently prevent European sales.

Tesla Roadster: Future Performance Vision

The next-generation Tesla Roadster remains in development with no confirmed UK availability date. Tesla has shown impressive performance targets, including 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds and 620 miles of range, but production timing remains unclear.

The Roadster represents Tesla's vision for electric performance, potentially featuring cold gas thrusters for enhanced acceleration and handling. However, if you’re looking for immediate Tesla performance, it would be best to consider the Model S Plaid or upcoming Model Y Performance. You can reserve a Roadster on Tesla’s website for £4,000 upfront plus £34,000 to be paid within 10 days. Tesla has not provided specific availability information for the new Roadster, making it a future aspiration rather than a current purchase option.

Tesla Supercharger Network & Technology

Tesla's Supercharger network is one of  Britain's most reliable rapid charging networks. Tesla Supercharging costs as little as £0.29/kWh for owners, or £0.39/kWh for non-Tesla drivers. This pricing advantage undercuts many competitors like IONITY, who charges 69-79kWh, creating substantial operational savings for Tesla owners. It’s important (and interesting) to note that there is a £1 idle fee for every minute a car sits at a charger whilst fully parked, to make the charging experience better for everyone. These fees only apply when the Supercharger station is at 50% capacity or more, and they double when the station is at 100% capacity!

If you don’t own a Tesla, don’t worry: you can use the Supercharger network! Tesla has 50 sites (500+ stalls) available for non-Tesla vehicles to use, showing confidence in their competitive advantage through integration and pricing. As a non-Tesla owner, you will pay more than someone who owns a Tesla. However, if you want to get the same prices as Tesla owners, you can pay for the Supercharger membership, which is £8.99 per month, which can save 10-20/kWh.

For Tesla users, navigation integration automatically plans Supercharger stops based on route requirements and current battery state, whilst automatic battery preconditioning ensures optimal charging speeds. This integrated approach eliminates range anxiety whilst maximising convenience.

You can save even more on EV charging through salary sacrifice. The Charge Scheme, built by the team behind The Electric Car Scheme, saves employees 20-50% on charging costs, making it cheaper at home, the office or on the go. Employees introduce The Charge Scheme as a workplace benefit, and employees can save hundreds on running their EV. It’s a win-win!
