Chinese EVs to topple Tesla? Predictions for popular 2025 EVs revealed

  • The Electric Car Scheme unveils EV model predictions for the coming year and most popular cars in 2024.

  • BYD, Tesla and Dacia predicted to lead 2025 sales.

  • Tesla took top two spots in 2024 as Musk continues to dominate EV space.

The Electric Car Scheme is revealing which EVs are set to top the sales charts in 2025 as well as the most popular EVs through the scheme in 2024.

The UK is set to experience a surge in demand, supply and popularity of EVs in 2025, with the EV sales target rising to 28% of total cars sold, cheaper models bursting onto the scene and a range of financial incentives making EVs more affordable than ever. The Electric Car Scheme has therefore revealed, with the help of their EV experts, the most important EVs in 2025, based on popularity, price and impact.

Top EVs for 2025

  1. Tesla Model Y (Juniper)

  2. BYD Atto

  3. Dacia Spring

  4. Tesla Model 3

  5. Volkswagen ID.2

  6. Volvo EX60

  7. BYD Sealion 7

  8. Polestar 3

  9. Hyundai IONIQ 9

  10. Kia EV3

While there are some familiar faces in the list, it is the newcomers that are set to make a big impact, with the Dacia Spring, which starts at just £14,995, set to change the game in terms of EV affordability. This will come as a welcome boost to the 68% of Brits that say upfront cost is the biggest barrier to getting an electric car. It is perhaps no surprise, however, that Tesla still tops the list and has two models in the top ten, with CEO Elon Musk set to benefit from Trump’s second presidency starting in 2025 as well as a new Juniper version of the Model Y providing a facelift for the already popular model. BYD is also set to enjoy a more prominent role in the next year, with greater availability and affordability making a difference for consumers.

Top EVs in 2024 at The Electric Car Scheme

  1. Tesla Model 3

  2. Tesla Model Y

  3. MG4

  4. Kia E-NIRO Electric

  5. Jaguar I-Pace

  6. Mercedes-Benz EQA

  7. BMW I4

  8. Polestar 2 Fastback

  9. Audi Q4 e-tron

  10. MG ZS

Out of the top 10 overall, 6 also appeared on the most popular used EVs in 2024, a subset that now accounts for around 50% of The Electric Car Scheme’s sales, after its introduction in 2024. The Tesla Model 3 also topped that list, with consumers keen to access the iconic model at a lower price point.

Thom Groot, CEO of The Electric Car Scheme commented:

"Next year is still Tesla’s to lose in terms of the most popular EVs, but we predict it will be closer than ever, with other models closing the gap. There is also likely to be a big jump generally in the popularity of EVs, as affordability increases, and the used market continues to mature. Manufacturers such as BYD could soon be a common site on UK roads but recognisable producers such Volvo and Volkswagen are still set to make an impact.

“EV uptake was never going to be linear, like many things it goes through peaks and troughs, but it looks like 2025 could be a transformative year with a number of big new models entering the market. As cheaper Chinese EVs become available, and the used EV market matures, we could see EVs available for less than £200 a month, a much more affordable price point. This is exactly why we set up The Electric Car Scheme, to help make it simpler and more affordable to get behind the wheel of an electric car.”

About The Electric Car Scheme

The Electric Car Scheme is a salary sacrifice employee benefit that allows employees to access electric cars at a 30-60% lower cost. The Electric Car Scheme is the first available offering from parent company, Net Zero Choices. The company was set up in June 2020 after Co-Founders Thom Groot and Tom Eilon found the government's tax incentive for employees to switch to electric and go green impossible to access.
