When can you get 24 plates? Everything you need to know

The beginning of a new year means new registration plates! The unveiling of the 2024 registration plate marks a significant moment in the automotive calendar. This event not only signals the introduction of a new batch of vehicles but also shows the advancements in technology and design.

Electric car salary sacrifice gives the average person the opportunity to drive a brand-new electric car if your employer offers it as an employee benefit. This is possible because employees pay from their pre-tax salary, which allows them to save on Income Tax and National Insurance contributions and means they can save between 30 and 60%.

For car enthusiasts and potential buyers alike, understanding the nuances of the 2024 plate is essential because it carries implications for vehicle value, prestige, and compliance with the latest regulations.

The significance of the 24-plate change

The significance of the 24 plate change - The Electric Car Scheme

The format of the 2024 registration plate follows a structured system that allows for the identification of the vehicle's age and the region of its registration. The plate consists of two letters that show the regional identifier (NP to NY if you live in the North for example), followed by two numbers that indicate the year of registration. The final section comprises three letters that are randomly assigned. This format is not only a legal requirement but also serves as a quick reference for the vehicle age.

The transition to the 2024 plate is more than a generic update; it represents the ongoing evolution of the automotive industry. With each plate change, there is an opportunity for manufacturers to release new models and for the market to refresh its offerings. The 2024 plate also arrives at a time when the industry is increasingly shifting towards sustainability, with a greater number of electric vehicles (EVs) bearing the new plate.

When is the 24 plate available?

The 24 registration plate was made available on the 1st of March 2024.

Identifying a 2024 registration plate is straightforward once you are familiar with the format. The two numbers following the regional identifier will be '24' for vehicles registered between March and August 2024, and '74' for those registered from September 2024 to February 2025. This distinction is crucial for those looking to ascertain the exact age of a vehicle.

How do registration plates influence the car’s value?

Registration plates with the number 24 indicate the latest cars available in the market. While they may not directly influence the car's intrinsic value, their introduction has a ripple effect on the market. The likelihood of your car's value decreasing arises when newer models with updated registration plates enter the market, creating competition. Additionally, if the specific car model has recently undergone improvements or enhancements, it could potentially be categorised as in 'runout' status, leading to a relative decrease in value.

Benefits of leasing a vehicle with a 24-plate

Leasing a vehicle with a 2024 plate comes with several advantages. Firstly, it ensures that the car is equipped with the latest features and complies with current environmental standards. Additionally, a newer registration plate can enhance the resale value of the vehicle, as it is perceived as more current and desirable in the pre-owned market.

When is the best time to lease a 24-plate vehicle?

The best time to lease a vehicle with a 24-plate is as early as possible, ensuring that you own the latest version of the car for an extended period before the subsequent number plate is introduced to the market in September.

What are the rules for number plates?

Car registration rules do not change based on a registration plate update. For instance, having a 24-plate does not mean you have to adhere to any specific rules.

As always, the front and back of the vehicle will need to show registration plates and the following rules apply:

  • White plates on the front and yellow plates on the back,

  • Numbers and letters must be 79 millimetres tall,

  • A gap is required between the numbers, indicating the year and regional identifiers and then three random letters,

  • All plates must use the ‘Charles Wright font.’ It is illegal for any vehicle with registration plates that do not conform to this font and has been since 2001.

In general, individuals possessing vehicles are prohibited from altering or intentionally concealing their registration numbers. Penalties of up to £1,000 may be imposed for such actions, and any vehicle lacking a visible registration plate will not pass its MOT inspection.

What is a green number plate?

You might notice an increasing number of vehicles displaying green tabs on their registration plates. These tabs are indicative of electric and zero-emission vehicles. These are cosmetic items rather than allowing any electric vehicle privileges. It's important to note that this is entirely voluntary, and you have the option to remove the green tab if you prefer.

According to Carwow, there have been some instances of people buying green number plates and putting them on petrol or diesel cars but this does not have any tangible advantages and is illegal. Number plates are typically required to be procured from authorised and registered vendors. Nonetheless, a loophole exists that permits individuals to acquire "show" plates from alternate vendors. These plates are marketed as non-road-legal and intended for placement on cars exhibited at automotive shows. While they may closely resemble authentic plates, they can be customized with non-standard spacing, prohibited numbers, and letter combinations.

What about private number plates?

This is one of the most expensive private number plates according to The Times Driving

Private number plates, known as personalised, cherished or vanity plates, are number plates purchased based on the specific characters they contain. Personalised plates can be bought directly from the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) or, if they’re already in circulation you can buy them from auctions, traders or private sellers.

Personalised number plates can represent anything from the driver’s name to a meaningful date or any other words as long as they are not deemed offensive. Some private plates are chosen because the owner likes the combination of letters and numbers they contain.

It is also worth knowing that a personalised number plate can make a car look older than it is (like having a 70 plate on a car that is from 2022) but you cannot have a personalised plate that implies the car is newer than it is.
